The South Africa Plant Improvement Organization's (SAPO) division for pathology and registration recently acquired two senior employees in addition to the BEB of the department, which will improve the foundation of this division. In addition, they will strife to provide an expanded series of professional services to the Industry. Some of these services will be available for flowers, table grapes, pome- and stone fruit plant material. This will include the establishment and management of plant units in SAPO tunnels, testing and indexing for the different pest as listed in the Deciduous Fruit Plant Improvement Scheme as well as diagnostic pathology tests, removal of viruses from infected plant units and field inspections of test sites. The production section also re-evaluated its functions and will still specialise in the following functions: Genetic and phytosanitary improvement of strategic soft fruit plant material, production and delivery of plant material of the highest possible quality and development of relevant technology.
